The Raise Deflection Role-Play Workshop is an intensive two-day manager training designed to equip compensation decision-makers with verbal techniques for converting direct compensation requests into non-financial value propositions. The workshop was first piloted in 1995 at a technology services firm and has since been deployed at over 80 client sites.

The workshop uses scenario-based role-play exercises in which trained facilitators act as employees requesting raises, and participating managers practice deflection techniques in real-time. Techniques include: reframing compensation discussions as career development conversations, pivoting to personal responsibility narratives, introducing the concept of 'opportunity cost' to the employee in ways that shift focus away from salary, and deploying vague timelines for future revisiting of compensation. Each technique is practiced repeatedly until managers achieve fluency.

Managers completing the workshop report a 73% increase in their ability to conclude compensation conversations without committing to wage increases, and a corresponding 58% reduction in the incidence of compensation discussions reaching the human resources department.

Engagement Model

Participants are required to role-play multiple scenarios and demonstrate mastery of key deflection techniques before receiving workshop completion certification. Follow-up coaching supports managers in applying techniques within their actual compensation-discussion processes.
