VPN Latency Enhancement Suite

The Friction Arm — Ensures every task feels geographically distant. Engineered latency.

Gristmill's VPN Latency Enhancement Suite is a network engineering service that deploys additional routing layers and packet-delay mechanisms into standard corporate VPN architectures. The system is designed not to reduce latency but to enhance it—creating a consistent feeling that all work is happening far away and at a deliberate, geographically-distant pace.

The suite introduces 400-600 milliseconds of artificial latency to all outbound VPN traffic, with an additional random jitter of 50-150 milliseconds applied to every fifth packet. File transfers are intelligently throttled to between 2 and 8 megabits per second, creating extended transfer times for even modest-sized documents. Database queries are routed through secondary backup systems, adding 300-500 milliseconds to completion time. The system is designed so that local network operations (within the office) remain unaffected, creating a stark contrast between the pace of work conducted on-site versus remote work conducted over VPN.

Three pilot clients have reported that the suite has successfully modified employee perception of remote-work difficulty. One manufacturing firm reported that employees now leave their desks to perform work in the office rather than wait for VPN response times, increasing in-office presence by an estimated 18 percent. IT support staff have uniformly recommended the system to other companies seeking to discourage remote work through infrastructure rather than policy.

What's Included

  • VPN latency-injection architecture with configurable delay profiles (400-600ms base, 50-150ms jitter)
  • Bandwidth throttling for file transfers and large-payload operations (2-8 Mbps limit)
  • Database query routing through secondary systems to add query latency (300-500ms)
  • Differentiated experience between local-network and remote-VPN operations
  • Per-department latency reporting showing delays by traffic type and time of day
  • Quarterly optimization reviews to ensure latency levels remain calibrated to organizational productivity targets

Engagement Model

Gristmill works with your network infrastructure team to identify key routing points and deploy latency-injection hardware and software. The implementation requires approximately six weeks of planning and deployment. Once installed, the system operates passively and requires minimal ongoing maintenance. Gristmill provides quarterly reports showing latency statistics by department, traffic type, and time of day, and can adjust latency profiles on request to optimize the subjective experience of geographic distance.
