Hot Desk Hunger Games
The Environment Arm — First come, first served seating. Controlled desk scarcity.
Hot Desk Hunger Games is Gristmill's solution for maximizing workplace competition through engineered seating scarcity. The system assigns individual desks to no one, instead creating a pool of shared desks numbered less than the full employee population. Employees arriving at the office first select desks; those arriving later find no desk assigned to them and must work from alternative spaces.
The system is designed with a strategic shortage of approximately fifteen to twenty percent. For a team of fifty employees, only forty to forty-two desks exist. Workspace is assigned daily on a first-come first-served basis, with status visible on a digital display at the office entrance. The program is marketed as a mobility initiative, a hot-desking efficiency program, and a strategy for reducing real-estate footprint. The subtext—that arrival time determines access to basic workspace—is communicated indirectly through example and observation.
Seven client sites have implemented the Hot Desk Hunger Games with consistent results: employees now arrive at the office earlier and remain longer in hopes of securing preferred desks. Arrival times have shifted earlier by an average of twenty-three minutes. Employees without assigned desks spend time in collaboration areas, cafeterias, or other transitional spaces, increasing apparent occupancy and reducing perceptions of remote work. Workplace tension regarding desk assignment has been noted but is considered a beneficial side effect.

Engagement Model
Gristmill assesses your current desk inventory and employee headcount to determine optimal scarcity levels. The assignment system is deployed over one to two weeks, with physical desk removals or relocations occurring during off-hours. Communication to employees begins one week prior, explaining the new hot-desking model. The system operates daily with real-time status updates. Employees check in upon arrival and select available desks. Gristmill provides monthly reports showing desk utilization, claim patterns, and occupancy data. The system can be adjusted to increase or decrease scarcity levels based on organizational goals.
