The Standing Desk Mandate

The Environment Arm — All chairs removed. Wellness posture. Mandatory standing.

The Standing Desk Mandate is Gristmill's most comprehensive office reconfiguration service, offering companies a way to eliminate chairs from all work areas while maintaining plausible deniability about the true motivation. The service includes removal of all seated-height furniture, refitting all desks to standing height, and comprehensive staff retraining on the wellness benefits of permanent standing.

The mandate covers all workspaces: individual desks, conference rooms, break areas, and executive offices. All existing chairs are removed and donated or disposed of, effectively preventing employees from sitting anywhere in the building during working hours. The program is marketed under the framing of musculoskeletal health, improved cardiovascular function, and enhanced productivity through active engagement. Internal communications emphasize circulation, posture alignment, and the documented health benefits of standing work.

Twelve client sites have implemented the Standing Desk Mandate. By week three of implementation, survey data shows that employees report standing for an average of 8.2 hours per day. Turnover rates in the first six months post-implementation increased by an average of seventeen percent. However, clients report that the mandate has succeeded in reducing the perceived comfort of the workplace, and employees no longer linger in office areas during breaks.

What's Included

  • Comprehensive office audit identifying all seated-height furniture and seating areas
  • Physical removal of all chairs and lounge seating from the facility
  • Retrofit of all desks and work surfaces to standing height (42-48 inches)
  • Wellness communication campaign explaining musculoskeletal and cardiovascular benefits
  • Standing posture training for all staff (optional but strongly encouraged)
  • Quarterly health-impact reporting showing average standing hours and perceived wellness improvements

Engagement Model

Gristmill conducts a site visit to catalog all existing seating and assess desk heights and work-surface configurations. A phased implementation occurs over two to four weeks, with all chair removal completed before the mandate takes effect. Communication begins two weeks prior to implementation, emphasizing wellness benefits. Gristmill provides optional in-person or virtual training on standing posture and ergonomics. Post-implementation monitoring tracks standing hours through desk-usage sensors and surveys. Quarterly reports document wellness outcomes and any adjustments to standing-work policies.
