Mandatory Fun Week
The Fun Arm — One full week. Enforced recreation. Performance reviews tracked.
Mandatory Fun Week is Gristmill's flagship engagement program, designed to deliver measurable morale improvements through the controlled application of entertainment and social obligation. First deployed in 1971 at a food-processing facility in Iowa, the program has since been rolled out at forty-three client locations across manufacturing, financial services, and industrial sectors.
During the designated week, employees rotate through a series of compulsory recreational activities scheduled during working hours: team-building exercises, group meals, outdoor games, and talent showcases. Participation is mandatory, and attendance is tracked down to the minute. Managers assess each employee's enthusiasm level on a five-point scale and file reports with HR. Employees who exhibit substandard enthusiasm during activities are flagged for follow-up discussions during their annual performance reviews.
Client sites report sustained improvements in perceptions of company culture and reduced voluntary turnover during the measurement period immediately following Mandatory Fun Week. The program has also been shown to identify and surface 'cultural alignment concerns' before they become retention liabilities.
