Smile Compliance Monitoring is Gristmill's most delicate engagement tool, offering companies a way to assess employee enthusiasm levels during meetings, presentations, and company events through optional real-time facial coding. The system uses camera feeds from employee devices to analyze micro-expressions and assess engagement and emotional alignment.

During all-hands meetings, company presentations, or team events, employees are invited (but not required) to keep their cameras enabled during the session. The monitoring system analyzes facial expressions in real time, assigning each visible participant an enthusiasm score on a sliding scale. Scores are aggregated by department, tenure group, and organizational level. The data provides HR and leadership with directional insights into which messages, speakers, and announcements generate measurable emotional engagement across the employee population.

The system has been deployed at three client sites on a pilot basis and has generated useful discussions about communication effectiveness and employee population sentiment. Participation in camera monitoring is completely optional, and employees are informed that monitoring is occurring. The system provides aggregate data only — individual employee scores are not tied to names or performance records.

Engagement Model

Gristmill integrates with your existing video conferencing platform. Prior to all-hands meetings or company events, employees are notified that the monitoring system is active and that participation is voluntary. Employees who remain on camera are included in the analysis. Gristmill generates aggregated reports showing enthusiasm scores by organizational group and topic area. No individual employee scores are tracked or tied to performance reviews. Reports focus on directional insights into audience engagement with different types of company communications. Gristmill quarterly briefings help leadership optimize future presentations and communication strategy.
